Basements and crawlspaces

Cool, closed spaces need the bigger dehumidifier and a little patience.

  • Basements run cool, and dehumidifiers slow down in the cold. The large dehumidifier keeps working better there.
  • Close basement windows and the door to the upstairs while drying.
  • Water from outside (groundwater, a window well, flooding) is treated as contaminated: clean and disinfect before drying.
  • Crawlspaces: put the dehumidifier inside the crawlspace if it fits, or duct its dry air in with lay-flat duct. Close the crawlspace vents while it runs.
  • A basement that's always damp needs its cause fixed: gutters, downspouts, window wells or grading.
