Is it dry yet?

How to tell it's really done, and why "looks dry" isn't enough.

  • Feel it, don't look at it. Carpet, the bottom of the walls and the subfloor should feel like the same materials in a dry room of the house. The surface dries first; the inside dries last.
  • Hardwood is done when the boards lie flat again, not when the top feels dry.
  • Most rooms take 3 days. Hardwood, soaked walls and basements often take 4 to 5.
  • Still damp after 3 days? Check the dehumidifier is draining, the room is closed up and warm, and the air movers are aimed along the walls. Then extend from your rental page if you need longer.
  • Stopping too early is how mold starts behind walls and under floors.
