Sewage, floodwater and mold safety

When to protect yourself, what to throw away, and when to call a pro.

Sewage and floodwater

  • Wear gloves, rubber boots and an N95 mask. Keep kids and pets out.
  • Carpet, pad and drywall that this water touched usually have to be cut out and thrown away.
  • Clean hard surfaces with soap and water, then an antimicrobial, before drying.
  • More than a small area: a restoration company is the safer call.

Mold

  • Mold covering more than about 100 square feet (EPA guidance) should be handled by a professional.
  • For small areas: N95 mask and gloves, plastic taped over the doorways, the air scrubber running the whole time.
  • Don't blow fans on mold: moving air spreads spores.
  • Mold comes back unless the damp is fixed.

Electricity

Never step into standing water near outlets, cords or appliances until the breaker for that area is off.
