Drying wet carpet

The order that works: extract, check the pad, then air movers and a dehumidifier.

  1. Stop the water and turn off power near any standing water.
  2. Extract the standing water with a carpet extractor. The more water you pull out now, the faster everything else goes.
  3. Check the pad. Lift a corner. Soaked pad under clean water: pull it and throw it out. Sewage or floodwater: the carpet and pad both usually have to go.
  4. Set up air movers around the room and a dehumidifier in the middle. Close the doors and windows.
  5. Run everything day and night and check it every day. Most carpet is dry in about 3 days.
  6. Put it back once the carpet and the subfloor feel like the rest of the house.
