Drying wet walls and drywall
Help air get to the wet part of the wall, and know when drywall has to come out.
- Pull the baseboards. Water that wicks up drywall dries much faster with the baseboards off.
- Drill small holes (about half an inch) near the bottom of the wall, behind where the baseboard was, in each space between studs. Air from an air mover aimed at the holes dries the inside of the wall.
- Aim air movers along the walls, all blowing the same way around the room.
- Swollen, soft or crumbling drywall won't recover: cut it out about a foot above the water line.
- Sewage or floodwater that touched drywall means cutting it out, not drying it.
- Insulation that got wet inside the wall usually has to come out too.
